Development Director

The American Alpine Club, the country’s premier mountaineering association, seeks a development professional with general experience in corporate sponsorships, membership recruitment, appeal mailings, planned giving, and individual fundraising. Position reports to the Executive Director. Working closely with other staff of The American Alpine Club, the Development Director will develop and implement prospect identification and research, cultivation and solicitation, communications, and some administrative duties.

The successful candidate will have three to five years development experience, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, outstanding organizational abilities, and a strong commitment to a team environment. Proven ability to accomplish goals and take initiative is essential. Salary low $40,000’s.

Campaign Director

The American Alpine Club, the country’s premier mountaineering association, seeks a fund raising professional with major gifts and grant writing experience to lead its $3 million capital campaign for the development of a national mountaineering museum in Golden, Colorado. Position reports to the Executive Director. Working closely with other staff of The American Alpine Club, the Campaign Director will participate in developing and implementing major gift strategies for corporations, foundations, individuals and government sources. Responsibilities include prospect identification and research, cultivation and solicitation, grant writing, campaign communications, leadership committee support, gift reporting, campaign events and stewardship.

The successful candidate will have five to ten years of previous development experience, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, outstanding organizational abilities, and a strong commitment to a team environment. Proven ability to design, direct and implement a capital campaign, accomplish goals and take initiative is essential. Ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and strategic direction are important as well. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Library Director

The American Alpine Club (AAC), the country's premier mountaineering organization, is seeking a Library Director. The Henry S. Hall, Jr. American Alpine Club Library is the second largest mountaineering library in the world, second only to the German Alpine Club's library in Munich, Germany. The Library has approximately 18,000 volumes. The catalog is online at http://americanalpineclub.library.net

The library circulates to members. It has an extensive rare book collection, a video collection, a map collection, archives, and a slide and photograph collection. The Library also houses and manages the 3,000-volume library collection of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC). A "Friends of the Library" group supports the AAC Library.

Salary Range: mid $40's

Supervises: Library Assistant, Professional Library Cataloger, volunteers and community service workers

Job Responsibilities:

  • Managing day to day operations with a support staff of one library assistant, volunteers & community service workers
  • Managing library cataloger who uses OCLC, Library of Congress Classification system, Spectrum
  • Reference services including walk-in, fax, phone-in and e-mail requests from members and others; including media requests
  • Outreach through newsletter articles, library orientations, etc.
  • Collection development and policy
  • Fund raising activities
  • Working closely with the Library Committee and other AAC officials
  • Working with the Colorado Mountain Club Library Director to serve the interests of the CMC members
  • Network and maintain professional contacts to further the interests of the Library
  • Supporting the mission of the American Alpine Club, the parent organization of the AAC Library

Qualifications: Required

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school
  • 5 years professional library experience including public service and library management
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, OCLC and L.C. classification system

Qualifications: Preferred

  • Experience in a special library or special collection
  • Collection evaluation and development experience
  • Experience with Spectrum software
  • Knowledge of mountaineering literature

Qualifications: Desirable

  • Mountaineering experience

Library Assistant Wanted

Library Assistant (Paraprofessional), Henry S. Hall, Jr. American Alpine Club Library, Golden

THE AMERICAN ALPINE CLUB (AAC), the country's premier mountaineering organization, is seeking a Library Assistant. This is a 40 hour per week position with some evening hours required. The Library Assistant reports to the Library Director and works closely with the AAC Library Committee.

THE HENRY S. HALL, JR. AMERICAN ALPINE CLUB LIBRARY is one of the largest mountaineering libraries in the world. The Library has approximately 18,000 volumes, over 200 journal titles (many foreign) and a Himalayan Library on the highest 8000 meter peaks. The library is open to the public, but the general collection circulates only to members. It also has an extensive rare book collection, videos, maps, archives, and photographs with an emphasis on the Alps and the Himalayas. The Library also houses and manages the library collection of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC).

SALARY RANGE and BENEFITS:

$25,000 to $30,000; Health/Life Insurance, American Alpine Club membership, pro-purchase for outdoor gear, 2 weeks vacation, 10 days sick leave annually.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serials coordinator for library journal exchange program, including but not limited to check-in of journals, database entry in Excel, Word and library automation package, preparing materials for bindery, ordering replacement copies of journals and shelving of journals.

Provide clerical support for the Library Director and the Cataloging Librarian, including but not limited to processing mail, ordering supplies, photocopying of research requests, processing books and videos, overdue notification, shelving books, and correspondence.

Work on information/circulation desk as needed.

Assist in special tasks as assigned, such as preparing bibliographies, signs, bookmarks, vertical file maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent command of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook (minimum 6 months experience)

  • Good knowledge of Internet searching.
  • Minimum of one year library experience.
  • Superior time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple requests.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience in a special library or special collection desired.
  • Knowledge of and experience in mountaineering a plus.
