Hello Cascade Section Members,

I hope you are all having a great summer and finding ways to stay cool. I want to let you know about a social and climbing event we are helping to sponsor this fall with cascadeclimbers.com and others. Final details and events are still being worked out but here is what we know now.

Cascade Climbers Full Moon Ropeup
"Fostering Stewardship of the Vertical Environment"
Date: Friday, October 10th thru Sunday October 12th, 2003
Location: Bridge Creek Group Campground, Icicle Canyon, Leavenworth

Join Northwest climbers for a weekend of camaraderie, climbing and communication. Planned events include: climbing/toprope instructional clinics; safety demonstrations; trails project with the Forest Service and Access Fund; bratwurst feed Saturday afternoon; pancake breakfast Sunday morning; slideshows and raffle Saturday evening to benefit the American Alpine Journal and the Access Fund (John Harlin, editor of AAJ, will be presiding). The event and camping is FREE and there will be FREE BEER thanks to our great sponsor OR and others. There will also be vendor representatives and climbing gear demonstrations. In addition to the AAC and cascadeclimbers.com, sponsors so far include: Omega Pacific, Marmot, The Access Fund, Cascade Crags, Second Ascent, Outdoor Research, Washington Alpine Club, Pro Mountain Sports. This will be a lot of fun and I hope you can attend. Full details will be sent later and posted on our web site http://cas.alpineclub.org/

Volunteers: As I will be out of the country when this takes place, I need a couple of volunteers to help coordinate the event with cascadeclimbers and to represent the AAC at the event. This will not take up much time but will be greatly appreciated! If you can do this please let me know as soon as possible. If you have an exciting climbing story to tell and would be willing to give a short slideshow on the Saturday evening please contact me. It will be great PR for the AAC and maybe for you!

On a separate note, the North Face in Seattle has asked me if anyone is interested in doing a slideshow at their downtown store this winter. If you are, please contact Paul McKinley, Seattle Store Manager, at (206) 622-4111 or email: TNF_Seattle_Store@vfc.com

Other news: Thanks to a few of our section members we have donated $1,000 to the AAJ recently. John Harlin is very grateful and the section will get some credit in the next issue!

I still get a lot of returned emails when I send out a newsletter (over 50 last time) and I am sure this will be no exception. Obviously if you are one of those whose address changed you will not be reading this but PLEASE keep me and the AAC main office up to date if you want to stay informed. You can update through the AAC web site at http://www.americanalpineclub.org/community/members.com

But it will help if you also notify me directly as it can take a while for changes to come through.

Thanks and take care,

Peter

Eastern Sierra MountainFest
Tri-County Fairgrounds
Bishop, CA
October 24-25, 2003

Eastern Sierra MountainFest is a non-profit event dedicated to enriching the mountain culture of the Eastern Sierra. It is held each fall in the town of Bishop, California. Eastern Sierra MountainFest donates a portion of its proceeds to various organizations including Inyo and Mono Search and Rescue.

This year’s festival is on Friday October 24 and Saturday October 25. On Friday afternoon listen to Jack Tackle, AAC’s 2003 Mountain Heroism Award winner, speak about Alaskan mountaineering challenges. Friday evening, Sir Chris Bonington will give a retrospective of his life of mountaineering and world exploration. On Saturday hear Gordon Wiltsie, mountaineer and photographer speak about his career with emphasis on the impact mountaineering has on indigenous peoples and the environment, followed Saturday evening by the Chang Tang Traverse presentation featuring Rick Ridgeway, Conrad Anker and Jimmy Chin. This presentation is given as a tribute to Galen Rowell and all speakers’ fees are being donated to Galen’s Tibet Scholarship Fund.

Scheduled book signings allow you to meet the speakers and have your treasured books autographed. In addition, the presenters participate in a panel discussion, and this year it will focus on environmental issues concerning Bishop-area bouldering. The panel discussion is FREE, and we invite you to join the dialogue and ask questions.

The MountainFair tradeshow is a great place to check out the latest outdoor gear designs, exquisite mountain photography and art, review old and new books from legendary mountaineers, learn about Eastern Sierra companies and organizations, and eat lunch while listening to live bluegrass music. It’s FREE; you do not have to be a ticket holder to enjoy the Eastern Sierra MountainFair!

Tickets go on sale June 30, and space will be limited!! A full weekend ticket is $65.00 until August 31, when it will increase to $75.00. Single event pricing for daytime events are $15.00 each and evening events are $30.00 each. A cocktail party/mixer precedes each evening show.
